MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid denied on Saturday that it is negotiating with Paris Saint-Germain to acquire star Kylian Mbappe.

Madrid have long sought to recruit the 24-year-old, who rejected the Spanish club in the past. Even so, some media continue to link him to the club that has been European champion 14 times.

In recent months, the Spanish press has speculated that Mbappe might join Madrid in the summer of 2024 following his contract with PSG expires.

But the Spanish club clarified in a statement that “Real Madrid wishes to express that these reports are completely false and that there are no negotiations with the player who belongs to PSG.”

Clubs are not allowed to contact players or other clubs until they are in the last six months of their contract.

This summer, Mbappe said he had no intention of activating the final year of his contract extension with PSG, leading to speculation that he will head to Madrid this time around. He has been with the French powerhouse since 2017, when he signed from Monaco.

In 2021, PSG rejected an offer of $190 million from Madrid for the world champion forward, who ended up signing his current agreement.

PSG hopes to convince Mbappe to stay.
