Filming your dinner girl to make a viral video is one of the latest trends that we have observed on social networks, TikTok in the lead.
What is the Girl Dinner ?
Accumulating more than 2.4 billion views on TikTok (2,400,000,000,000), #girldinner is a real phenomenon on social networks! The concept ? Even if we didn’t know the name, we are already almost all (and all) familiar with it since it designates an ultra-light meal that you eat in the evening when you’re too lazy to cook ! Moreover, more than a meal, it is more of a quick, well-made snack that requires no cooking or preparation and can be ready in 5 minutes tops! The video that started the trend was filmed by Olivia Maher, an American influencer inspired by medieval snacks, who explains that she enjoys dining on a slice of bread with butter and cheese! Seduced by this lazy meal, she describes it as girl dinner literally ‘girl’s dinner’. And that’s how the #girldinner trend was born!

After Olivia Maher, dozens of young women took up the trend by filming the snack they usually eat as dinner. Originally the ‘girl’s dinner’ would combine cheese, cold meats, bread and fruit in very small portions.
The dangers of the challenge girl dinner
The problem? Over time and videos, what was originally a fun, easy-to-prepare snack became an ultra-restrictive micro-meal. And among the shared Girl Dinners we find: mini cocktail sausages, or a handful of Babybel® or just a few pickles, a slice of ham rolled in gouda cheese, a packet of chips, a glass of soda or even a glass of ice cubes.. . ! THE girl dinner has thus become an ultra-light meal carrying its share of dangers… The harms of the girl dinner?
- 1. He values stereotypes
By suggesting that a ‘girl’s dinner’ is a light, not really balanced snack, the girl’s dinner conveys gender stereotypes,
- 2. It values eating disorders as nutritional recommendations
Eating 3 pickles for dinner is not healthy. Far from it. And flaunting this snack to follow a trend is seen, by many, as a way of validating and approving eating disorders…
- 3. It can be a bad influence on young TikTok users
To follow the trend #girlsdinner, the women will then stage the snack serving as dinner in the hope of garnering views and likes on TikTok. Excluding the followers of these social networks being particularly young (56% of TikTok users are women and 51.3% of these users are between 13 and 24 years old1), we can be concerned that the young girls who follow this trend are not aware of the issues: between the cult of thinness, challenges bordering on the absurd and the increase in eating disorders… it is their health that the followers of Girl Dinner might endanger!
- 4. It obscures a more serious societal issue
Has eating (too) little for dinner become trendy? Perhaps… but implicitly, the trend of girl dinner also raises the question of the precariousness of young students who do not have enough to eat properly. And some Internet users do not hesitate to draw a parallel between the girl dinner and the poor dinnerarguing that a girl’s dinner is, in reality, more of a poor man’s dinner.
What are the benefits of the diet girl dinner ?
No matter how much we look, the benefits of this viral trend are tenuous. If the girl dinner sticks to its original version (bread + cheese + cold meats + fruit) and it is consumed in an exceptional way, it can give rise to a video full of humor. Enough to fuel your TikTok account a little and, why not, hope to get a few views. Otherwise ? We are still looking…
