A year and a half ago, Serge was a fulfilled man. Good job, married, children and a house, the fifty-year-old lived a perfectly normal life. However, this balance collapsed overnight. “I was at home with my family for fourteen years and suddenly I was sleeping in a car in a parking lot,” he tells AD.nl.

For a year and a half, Serge spent his nights in his Zoetermeer vehicle (in the Netherlands). The man found himself all alone, with no one to help him. This year, he even celebrated his birthday, his 56th, in his car. The trigger was back problems due to double scoliosis. Unable to sleep, mentally difficult period, lost job and ending marriage… The sad events followed one following another.

Having his pride, the fifty-year-old did not want to move in with his parents. Considered economically homeless, Serge had to resort to sleeping in his car to gradually get things back on track. If he deplores that no urgent help has been put in place to find him a home. It was finally by turning to the Dutch National Institute for Social Assistance and Rehabilitation (Limor) that he was able to find a home: a small apartment in the Noordhove district. “Unfortunately, I can only stay here for four months maximum. Afterwards, I have to figure it out on my own. I’m afraid of returning to the streets in a few months,” he adds.
