The Impact of Nasrallah’s Speech on the Streets of Beirut: An Inside Look

Beirut had woken up to empty streets, unusually, and traffic on its roads was limited to a small number of citizens and school students, while some jobs were completed “remotely” from homes.

After the speech, it is not the same as before
Once the speech, which was expected in Lebanon and abroad, ended, traffic quickly returned to normal, as if nothing had happened.

What did the movement look like in the evening in Beirut?
During a field trip to Sky News Arabia, a store owner in the New Road area commented, saying: “We listened to the speech, which was expected,” and he was satisfied with the phrase, “just exaggeration.”

Jamal (a father of 3 children) told Sky News Arabia: “My family temporarily moved outside the capital to spend hours during Nasrallah’s television appearance, for fear of its repercussions and similar to what happened to us in 2006, and headed towards relatives in the north of the country. It was just precautionary measures.” .

On another side of the city, dozens of students gathered and went to a commercial complex to celebrate a special occasion. One of them told Sky News Arabia: “We decided to leave the house following the speech. We were not allowed to do so during the day by our parents.”

Madeleine said: “For a month, the Lebanese have been holding prayers so that Hezbollah will not get excited and go to war.”

She added: “After the speech, we will return to reality. It can be said that starting tonight, we will gradually reduce the level of anxiety that we were experiencing.”

In this context, a passerby commented jokingly with his friend in front of a food store, saying: “If you enter our homes, you will find food supplies piled up and water bottles on top of each other… We were ready to flee if Nasrallah took a serious decision to go to war.”

Entertainment and satire
After the end of the speech, the Lebanese comments on social media sites returned strongly, as they were mostly sarcastic.

A social activist wrote: “Who will buy the mortar I collected in my house from me?”

Shooting
On the security level, Nasrallah’s speech was accompanied by heavy gunfire in various areas near the southern suburb of Beirut, and traffic stopped on the capital’s roads, and in many cities, including Tire and Sidon in the south and Tripoli in the north.

Political analyst Asaad Bishara told Sky News Arabia: “We expected this kind of rhetoric, and it seemed clear that Hezbollah had no intention of being drawn into war.”

Sovereign Front member Bechara Khairallah told Sky News Arabia: “Nasrallah said everything and said nothing.”

He added: “His words were general. They were said a year ago and ten years ago.”

He concluded: “He talked regarding steadfastness, patience, and a promised victory, and gave us a new date for a new look and great promise, Kammoon.”
