Remembering Former Ozeki Asashio Nagaoka – A Legend of Sumo from Muroto City, Kochi Prefecture

Former ozeki Asashio Nagaoka is from Muroto City, Kochi Prefecture.

He stepped into the sumo for the first time in the makushita tournament at the spring tournament in 1978, and was promoted to makuuchi at the Kyushu tournament that year, thanks to his strong pushing sumo skills.

He was promoted to ozeki following the spring tournament in 1985, won his first championship at the spring tournament in 1985, and served as an ozeki for 36 tournaments until he retired at the spring tournament in 1989.

Also, due to his good physique and cheerful personality, he was affectionately known by his fans as “Daichan.”

After retiring, he led the Wakamatsu stable, and then took over the Takasago stable in 2002, where he mentored his disciples as a master, training former yokozuna Asashoryu as well as experienced ozeki Asanoyama.

After retiring at the age of 65, he remained with the association as Nishikijima Master under the re-employment system, but he resigned from the association a year ago for violating guidelines regarding the new coronavirus.

According to officials from the Japan Sumo Association, Mr. Nagaoka had been unwell and passed away on the 3rd.

He was 67 years old.
