Could the Tesla Cybertruck dethrone the truck sales leaders in the future?

CEO Elon Musk says Tesla aims to build 200,000 of its Cybertrucks a year. The Tesla Cybertruck is a direct competitor to several other electric pickup trucks, most notably the Ford F-150 Lightning.

Musk might miss his goal, but that might still hurt Ford, which has light demand for its flagship electric vehicle (EV) and the Rivian electric pickup truck.

Elon Musk has already made scandalous comments regarding his product plans

The first Cybertrucks were supposed to roll off the assembly line three years ago. And he says there is a waiting list that will take Tesla more than a year to fill. However, someone who claims to be waiting for a Cybertruck may never buy one.

Recently, Musk commented that Tesla had “built its own tomb,” increasing capacity to build the Cybertruck. Presumably, the Cybertruck has emerged from that grave. The first will roll off the assembly line this month.

The fate of the Tesla Cybertruck, at least in the short term, rests on the magic of the company, which is the magnet of its brand.

Tesla delivered 435,000 vehicles in the third quarter. Of course, some of them were in other markets, mainly China. However, Tesla is the leader in electric vehicle market share in the United States.

Ford has sold only a few thousand Lightnings this year. This is despite the fact that the gasoline-powered F-150 has been the best-selling vehicle in the United States for 40 years. That should give Ford a built-in target market, but that hasn’t worked.

Tesla’s Cybertruck might be a failure. There is growing evidence that Americans have avoided electric vehicles because they take too long to charge.

People can fill a car with gasoline in 10 minutes. There are still only a few thousand charging stations in the United States, compared to 125,000 gas stations.
