In the north of the country, falling trees caused by violent gusts of wind caused the death of two people in Ghent. The first, a German woman in her sixties accompanied by her daughter, was killed by a falling tree in a park in the city center of the City of Counts. The second victim, a five-year-old child, died following being struck by the branch of a tree in a playground located near the city’s university hospital.
A new depression
As HLN indicates, a new storm will blow over Europe once more in the next 24 hours. Several names have already been given to him: Debi, Elisa, Domingos. It is during the day of this Friday that a depression will indeed form above the Atlantic Ocean, before transforming into a storm. But then, what to expect?
Above all, you should know that it is from Saturday evening and during the night that Domingos will reach its peak. This new storm will affect, like Ciaran, France before our country. Gusts of up to 140 km/h and waves of more than 10 meters are then expected among our neighbors, which should move to code orange in certain places.
In Belgium, the situation fortunately looks calmer. According to the graphs, we can hope to have “only” gusts ranging from 60 to 80 km/h, although peaks of 90 km/h or more will be locally possible. According to these forecasts, a yellow alert will undoubtedly be issued by the IRM for the weekend.

According to the law, the term storm is used when the wind force is or exceeds 100 km/h. In terms of insurance, some companies already consider gusts of 80 km/h as storms. You can therefore be covered once morest damage caused by winds from 80 km/h or 100 km/h, depending on your insurer.
Measures to follow
Before the storm
Make sure you maintain your roof well (watch out for loose tiles, etc.). Regularly check the condition of the chimneys. Install a lightning rod on the roof. Dock the oil tank and block the openings. Place surge arresters at the sockets: they protect once morest overvoltages caused by lightning on the electricity network.
When a storm is forecast
Bring in anything that can be blown away by the wind. Close doors and windows. Turn off the computer(s) and television and unplug electrical appliances.
During the storm
In open country, never take shelter under a tree during stormy weather. Stay indoors. Do not call from a landline. Do not stay near running water in the home. Therefore, do not take a bath or shower. Power outages may occur: under no circumstances touch electrical wires that have fallen to the ground.
In case of storm damage
The emergency services can cover your damaged roof with canvas (short-term solution). Contact your insurer as soon as possible. He will be able to answer all your questions and help you start the claim settlement procedure. Take photos of the damaged areas: they may be useful in compiling your insurance file. Do not postpone repairing a damaged roof , this can only bring you additional problems.
