Exploring the Benefits of Tongxinluo: Traditional Chinese Medicine for Improved Heart Health

There are certain vegetables used by ancient cultures for their medicinal powers that today have scientific endorsement. From Asian spices capable of preventing cancer to ginseng, a popular plant with fleshy roots used in traditional Chinese medicine that is today recommended as a complement in different health conditions, the range is wide.

Now, a new study wanted to put Tongxinluo to the test, a traditional Chinese medicine that is often sold in the form of capsules or tablets, industrialized presentations that are available in herbalists and that, of course, contains ginseng.

Ginseng has traditionally been considered to have clinical benefits in patients with angina, including reducing the occurrence of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), and complications of some types of cardiac surgery. However, systematic reviews of these works are lacking.

Along these lines, a team of researchers has recently analyzed whether Tongxinluo might help reduce the symptoms of the worst of the heart attacks: acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), a serious type of heart attack that occurs when A coronary artery suddenly becomes completely blocked.

Improved heart health following one year

Tongxinluo is a traditional Chinese medicine formulation widely used for millennia. The compound has shown cardioprotective potential in small in vitro, animal and human studies, but has not been tested in larger research.

Therefore, medical experts from the National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases of China recently launched their study. In their 12-month clinical trial of 3,777 STEMI patients, the team found that this treatment was associated with a notable reduction in cardiac and cerebrovascular events (such as stroke). The investigation The original was published in October 2023, in the prestigious magazine JAMA.

According to the work, people who took Tongxinluo capsules experienced a significant improvement in their health following 30 days and one year of use as an adjuvant therapy combined with guideline-directed treatments for STEMI.

The randomized clinical trial was conducted at 124 clinical centers across China. The average age of the participants was 61 years, and 77% were men. The results show that the main adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events decreased substantially with Tongxinluo at 30 days.

There were also fewer cardiac deaths. Furthermore, these effects were maintained for one year without significant changes in major bleeding. In any case, it should not be overlooked that, as in any natural treatment, it is very important to have the endorsement of a specialist doctor. Interactions with other medications should also be considered.

What does Tongxinluo contain?

For thousands of years, traditional medicines, often made from plant or insect components, have earned a reputation for improving health. Naturally derived formulas present a wide spectrum of mechanisms that act through multiple pathways in the body. Tongxinluo is made from powders and extracts of plants and insects.

The study has other limitations. Although Tongxinluo has been shown to be beneficial for health, it is still not known exactly how it works. Experts are not sure how the mechanism of the compound promotes healing. However, clinical evidence suggests that the components paeoniflorin, ginsenoside Rg1 and ginsenoside Rb1 may support and improve cardiovascular function.

Paeoniflorin, from white peony root extract, is one of the main active components in traditional Chinese medicine. It has been used to treat cardiovascular conditions such as myocardial infarction and atherosclerosis.

Ginsenoside is the active ingredient in Panax ginseng. Studies suggest that this compound may help treat atherosclerosis by protecting vascular endothelial cells from oxidative stress. Tongxinluo means “open (tong) the network (luo) of the heart (xin).” It was approved in China for angina pectoris (stable angina) and ischemic stroke in 1996.

The authors of the current study maintain that their work “incorporated all the key elements of randomized clinical trials, including randomization, placebo control, blinding, prespecified outcome measures […] and blind committee adjudication of clinical endpoints.”

Thus, they trust that “the current study can serve as a model for future clinical trials aimed at evaluating the safety and effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine.” However, since all participants were Chinese, this may limit the study’s conclusions to other ethnic populations.
