After brain tapping, there is a new method that promises to revolutionize the nights of those who have difficulty falling asleep: cognitive shuffle.
What is cognitive shuffle?
The cognitive shuffle – or cognitive shuffling – is a method of falling asleep developed by a specialist in cognitive sciences, Luc Beaudoin. The initial idea is that, constantly in demand, we have gotten into the habit of being in a state of alert all the time and we are subject to the random thoughts that overwhelm us at every moment. The cognitive shuffle will then work to divert attention by forcing us to focus on another subject. Result ? Anxiety decreases…and we have less difficulty falling asleep!
Ready to try the promising technique of cognitive mixing? Here’s how to do it:
- we choose a letter at random (for example “F”),
- we think of a word starting with this letter (“Flour”) and we take the time to visualize it, to write it in our mind (ideally we choose words composed of at least 5 letters),
- we think of another word starting with the same letter and of all the words starting with the same letter that come to mind (“Fig”, “Easy”, “Foraine”…)
- then, we change letters, moving to the next letter in the very first word (in our example it is “A”, the 2nd letter of “Flour”)
- we continue by moving on to the next letter etc.
We continue until we fall asleep, this should not take more than 15 minutes.
