At the end of October, 264,232 people were registered as unemployed in Austria, and 74,664 had taken part in training courses run by the Public Employment Service (AMS). A total of 338,896 people were unemployed. The rate has increased to 6.3 percent compared to October 2022, when it was six percent, the Ministry of Labor announced.
“We see that the situation on the labor market is largely stable, but overall is developing less dynamically compared to the record year of 2022 due to the economically challenging situation,” said ÖVP Labor Minister Martin Kocher.
In the ZIB2, Kocher spoke out once morest a large economic stimulus package in order to reduce unemployment figures. “A broad package would fuel inflation,” he warned. It would be more effective to invest in training and further education programs in order to fill the many vacancies.
“The short-term economic problems will end next year,” said Kocher. Long-term challenges for Europe would include higher energy prices, aging societies with less economic growth and decarbonization.
Construction and industry severely affected
“Austria is in a recession,” said AMS board member Petra Draxl. The current labor market data showed a fairly similar picture to last month. “Unemployment is rising, especially in construction and industry; Styria and Upper Austria are particularly affected here.”
According to AMS data, the number of unemployed people in construction rose by 1,626 people or 10.9 percent to 16,592 in October compared to the previous year. The recessionary industrial economy can be seen in Upper Austria, which is often referred to as the “industrial federal state”: there, according to the states, there were 28,641 people without work (excluding training participants), with an increase of 10.9 percent or 2,819 people last month.
