The US Navy is being commanded by a woman for the first time in its history. The Senate confirmed Admiral Lisa Franchetti as commander in chief of the Navy by a vote of 95-1. She will also be the first woman to serve on the Joint General Staff of the US Armed Forces.
Armed Services Committee Chairman Jack Reed praised Franchetti’s career path. The admiral worked her way up in the navy and proved herself. “She has taken on every challenge that has been thrown at her and excelled at it,” he said. “Admiral Franchetti has been a trailblazer at every stage of her career.”

Franchetti is the Navy’s deputy chief of operations and has commanded at all levels as a naval warfare officer. She led the U.S. 6th Fleet, was the second woman to be promoted to four-star admiral in the U.S., and served multiple tours of duty, including as commander of a destroyer and twice as commander of an aircraft carrier battle group.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin recommended Admiral Samuel Paparo for the post. However, President Joe Biden ignored this and nominated Franchetti. Paparo, meanwhile, is set to become commander of the Indo-Pacific Command.
