SCR Altach has reached the quarter-finals of the ÖFB Cup once more following nine years. In a duel between two Bundesliga clubs with the same points, Vorarlberg beat FC Blau-Weiß Linz 2-0 (1-0) on Thursday. Lukas Gugganig (33rd) and Dominik Reiter (73rd) scored the Altach goals in front of the home crowd in a game that turned into a “rain battle”.
The more well-rehearsed team prevailed. Altach coach Joachim Standfest had relied on the nominal one and welcomed Dejan Stojanovic, who was recently missing, back in goal. Gerald Scheiblehner, however, completely rebuilt Blau-Weiß. Compared to the 2-0 win once morest WAC, nine new players played. The fresher team initially recorded the more dangerous scenes in heavy rain.
A grab by Felix Strauss in the Altach penalty area on the jersey of Conor Noß, who was breaking through, went unpunished by referee Sebastian Gishamer (8th). There is no Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in this phase of the competition. Shortly followingwards, Stefan Feier missed the big chance to make it 1-0. Although the Altach defense had forgotten regarding the striker in the six-yard box, the header was completely unsuccessful (16′).
The Vorarlbergers gave an idea of why they had started with a goal drought that had already lasted four games, but broke the spell as a result of a corner kick: Gugganig headed in from close range following a cross from Lukas Fadinger (33′). The long-time Altach goalie Andreas Lukse had no chance of defending.
Altach then controlled a game from a stable defense that was quite entertaining despite the adverse grass conditions. Four newcomers arrived at the hour mark, including Ronivaldo, for the Linzers, who were chasing in vain. The goalscorer was unable to control the ball in a good position (64′).
Altach made the preliminary decision on the counterattack. Reiter first knocked in with a ball following going around Lukse and slipping (66′). The “Joker” once once more showed off his speed in the 73rd minute and was successful with a powerful shot into the near corner following a hole pass from Atdhe Nuhiu. With the help of debutant Manuel Prietl, the home team secured victory without any trepidation.
“It was really difficult in the conditions. We took on the cup fight correctly and found the right means,” said Reiter on ORF. Standfest emphasized: “A lot is possible in the cup. We deserved to get through, but we were lucky with the penalty situation at the beginning.” Altacher’s last quarter-final advance was once morest Salzburg in the spring of 2015 (0:4).
Scheiblehner mourned a “crystal clear” penalty. “The course of the game didn’t speak for us. We played a very good away game,” said the Linz coach. “On this difficult ground it is difficult to catch up. Congratulations to Altach, in the end they deserve it because they fought just as well.”
