The Mamadou Sakho affair takes a definitive turn. Following the altercation that the central defender had with his coach last week at the end of a training session, one had to suspect that the parties would take different routes. Already no longer part of his coach’s plans since this summer, the 33-year-old made the decision to leave Montpellier with immediate effect (he was under contract until June 2024). He made the announcement himself on his Instagram account.

“Following the incident which took place last week at the training center and for which I decline all responsibility, I decided, on this day of 02/11/2023, to end my collaboration with the Montpellier Hérault Sport Club. I spent two years in this family club where I enjoyed sharing my high-level experience with my teammates and my “little brothers” from the training center. (…) Finally, I wanted to particularly thank the president, Laurent Nicollin, who, like his late father did before him, directs the MHSC with the values and principles that are dear to me”writes Sakho in particular.

Sakho leaves on his own
The former Parisian will therefore not be at the Parc des Princes tomorrow evening to reunite with his training club. Despite his statement, it probably wouldn’t have been anyway. Since the start of the season, Michel Der Zakarian had stopped counting on him. The central defender only played 6 minutes of play. It was October 1 once morest Lorient. In just over two years at the MHSC, he will have had a full and successful first year (29 starts out of 29 matches played in the league), a more complicated second (9 starts out of 15 Ligue 1 matches played) which opened the way for the continuation of his adventure in Hérault.

The club wanted to get rid of him this summer, due to his relegation in the hierarchy and especially his very high salary which no longer corresponded to his status. Montpellier didn’t plan to fire him either. Rather than staying where he was no longer welcome, Mamadou Sakho, according to our information, decided to leave on his own. Now free from any contract, the French international with 29 caps (2 goals) will be able to bounce back wherever he wants and especially without waiting for the next transfer window.
