Storm “Ciaran” arrived in Belgium and has also affected the Brussels Region since Thursday morning. To cope with this, the Brussels firefighters have strengthened their workforce, in particular through a “staff recall to have a full on-call staff”indicates Walter Derieuw, spokesperson for SIAMU (Urgent Medical Intervention and Aid Service).
And the firefighters have had no shortage of work since this morning. “Essentially for flying tree branches and fallen trees”, specifies the spokesperson. There are also other stolen objects such as parts of scaffolding which were installed for work on buildings.
The brunt of the storm was expected to cross Brussels between noon and 2 p.m. At the end of the followingnoon, there is still a lot to do for the firefighters. “We have so far completed 85 interventions and our men are busy on around fifteen others at the moment. Then, there are still 180 interventions pending. Fortunately so far no major disasters, nor injuries.”
Besides this, firefighters must also respond to other calls for more “classic” interventions: “fires, person fell in the canal (as was the case this followingnoon with the intervention of two young people who dived to rescue the person),censors blocked, evacuation of sick and injured. In total, this Thursday, we are approaching 600 ambulance and firefighter interventions for storm damage and more classic interventions combined. An “ordinary” 24-hour day has around 350 hours. concludes Walter Derieuw.
