The perinatal period is filled with preconceived ideas and prejudices. The collective imagination sometimes reflects a romanticization, an idealization of this period in the life of a woman, a couple, a family. However, the reality is much more complex, because there are a multitude of aspects that are taken into account to define this perinatal period.

The CHUV perinatal research group worked for two years to create the “Bébé en tête” exhibition. For two years, the team studied, analyzed and discussed the theme.

The primary will? Create a dialogue between researchers and the public to increase understanding and break the silence regarding perinatal care. With this work, the research group also wants to improve the care of people who are experiencing the event of the arrival of a baby.

The team conceptualized an exhibition, with the help of the Wapico agency, that was fun, interactive and immersive. “We want to make people feel the experience to increase the impact of the message and raise awareness,” explains Antje Horch, director of the “Baby in Mind” project.

From his idea and his arrival

Having a child is a journey unique to each individual. From the desire to have a child, to the plan to try to have one, to becoming a parent. The journey is sometimes long and can also be traumatic.

The “Baby in Mind” exhibition aims to show all aspects of reality from conception to the arrival of the baby. “It’s an extraordinary exhibition. It is a courageous project to dare to talk regarding these taboos. As long as we talk regarding it, it makes them legitimate and there is collective awareness,” explains Julie Bourdin, head midwife in the delivery room who participated in the project.

Through scientific studies and testimonies, the viewer immerses himself in life experiences which demonstrate that there are no patterns. “The stories and testimonies that we discover through the exhibition allow us to truly understand the diversity of experiences, these honest conversations open dialogue and can inspire others to speak and seek support,” defends David Baud, chef from the Obstetrics Department of the CHUV which participated in the project.

This is the motto of this exhibition: to open dialogue and provide support to those who need it.

Because fathers and mothers all experience different challenges. “I am delighted that this exhibition can perhaps remove the blinders and break the collective imagination,” adds Cristina Guillet, general coordinator of the “Born too early” association, partner of the project, and mother witness for the exhibition . “The reality is not what we see on social networks or in advertisements. A mother or father is not always happy, there are very hard moments as well as very beautiful ones. It’s the duality of parenthood.”

Five stages, but a thousand different experiences

Coralie Peguet, general coordinator and scientific editor, worked during these two years on the studies carried out within the perinatal research group, but also on the design of the exhibition. She was our guide during the press conference.

What we liked from the start were the interactive elements throughout the exhibition. “All the testimonies can be listened to in French and German, but visitors can also ask us for written testimonies,” explains Coralie Peguet.

We discover five chapters, five stages that everyone expecting a baby will experience. And in each chapter, the objective is to change the vision anchored by the society in which we live.

In the image above, the bed is flipped through like a book and we discover the different family models of our time (heterosexual, homosexual, single parent). The wheel of fortune will depict the unpredictable paths in the desire to have a child.

Here the goal is to open the dialogue regarding wanting a child or not, but also to talk regarding infertility which affects 10% of couples and both women and men.

Tetris to heal trauma

The hardest taboos to break and that the “Baby in Mind” project team hopes to break with the exhibition is perinatal mourning, postpartum depression and childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD-A). We’re not going to spoil it all for you. But we retained some important figures.

One in five pregnancies ends early.

15% of mothers and 10% of fathers have postpartum depression

12% of women develop PTSD-A symptoms following childbirth, and at least 1.3% of fathers are affected

A research group has also found a way to treat postpartum trauma. Tetris. And yes, it seems that playing Tetris following childbirth would greatly reduce the traumatic impact on the mother. 45% of women who played it had fewer mood swings or intrusive thoughts than those who did not play it.

Meetings to open the floor

Alongside the exhibition, the “Bébé en tête” team organizes workshops, debates, discussion groups (between parents, grandparents, etc.) to exchange and free up speech. “This allows us to create a link between the medical team and associations or anyone who can provide support. The medical profession will provide care, while an association and a trained person will take care of the parent(s) in difficulty, this is an important synergy for the well-being of the parents and the family.” explains Cristina Guillet.

All the information on the different activities can be found on the “Bébé en tête” website: ici.

The exhibition “Baby in mind» takes place from November 3, 2023 to March 24, 2024, at the Musée de la Main at the CHUV. Free entry.
