A cemetery is also sometimes a place of history. In our country, more and more graves are now connected using a QR code.
In some cemeteries, visitors can learn more regarding deceased people who left their mark on history. This is done using a QR Code.
“The idea is to be able to scan this QR code. It comes back to the Come-back site link. And there, we find the person’s file” explains Come-back founder, Virginie Allard.
Once scanned, the QR code links to a sort of online memorial retracing the life of the deceased, sometimes enriched with photos, videos and testimonies.
Virginie created this project ten years ago, following the death of her grandmother. “It’s true that we are surrounded by anonymous people, but who have all done amazing things and I would like them to be remembered.“
“It’s a bit like ‘a duty to remember’ to pay homage to anonymous people and for future generations. I have grown children. Finally, we go back in time” she says.
More than 200 QR codes have been generated in recent years.
The city of Namur proud of “certain Namur residents who have left their mark on history”
In Namur, it is the local and cultural heritage that is highlighted at the initiative of the City.
“We are proud of certain Namur residents who have made history. Not even necessarily the history of Namur” says Charlotte Deborsu, alderman for living environment and population in Namur.
“We have, among others, François Bovesse who was nevertheless a politician who had a strong impact on Wallonia. We also have a member of the royal family, Princess Shirazi.”
A trend that not everyone agrees with
These QR codes are affixed to graves, cemetery columbariums and even urns. Little known in Belgium, the concept of connected graves is challenging.
“This is the first time I’ve seen something like this. There are sometimes people who do not come to the cemetery, so for them, it can be an opportunity to rediscoverr” says a visitor.
For others, this opportunity is less appealing: “It seems a bit immaterial. We like getting together as a family, consulting albums, seeing each other regularly.”
QR codes are accessible to everyone. They persist over time. What might interest the younger generation?
