Lawrence Faucette, the second person to receive a genetically modified pig heart, died this Monday, the University of Maryland Hospital (USA) reported.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lawrence Faucette, the 58-year-old patient with terminal heart disease,” reads a statement issued by the hospital, explaining that Faucette had made significant progress following his surgery, undergoing physical therapy. and spending time with family members, but his heart began to show signs of rejection in recent days. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, the patient eventually died.
“He was a man who was always thinking regarding others, especially me and his two children,” said his wife, Ann Faucette, recalling that on the last night before he died, her husband was lying in his bed and worrying regarding himself. His sister had already slept.
Faucette was close to almost certain death due to heart failure, as other health problems made him unsuitable for a traditional transplant. In this context, on September 20, surgeons at the University of Maryland hospital transplanted the organ, thus becoming the second operation of this type in the world, following the same team carried out the first in 2022.
The first man to receive a pig heart transplant died 2 months following the operation.
