In Rothen ignites on RMC, Mathieu Valbuena reacted to the serious incidents that occurred around the Vélodrome before the OM-OL match on October 29 in Ligue 1.

Guest of Rothen ignites on RMC, Wednesday November 1, Mathieu Valbuena (39 years old) deplores the “hatred” which exists between some of the supporters of Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais. He who played for both clubs – and who was violently attacked with a doll bearing his likeness hanging in the stands – is hoping for strong sanctions following the serious incidents of October 29 around the Vélodrome.

“For me, it was in a different context, because it happened in the stadium, he believes. I knew what to expect having played for eight years at OM (2006-2014) then by signing two years later for Lyon (2015-2017). I knew that I was not going to be applauded. But then, I was surprised. This rivalry between Lyon and Marseille is growing more and more.”

“If we let this pass, it will start once more”

“I have the impression that there is hatred on both sides. There wasn’t that before. Maybe my signing in Lyon started something. (…) Today, there are no more limits. If we let this pass, it will start once more,” he predicts.

“For me, it’s not OM lovers who are doing this,” adds the former French international. “They punish the supporters who come to see a match. (…) Maybe it will fall on OM , but if we don’t make strong and fair decisions, it will continue.”

Mathieu Valbuena, following four seasons at Olympiacos, joined Apollon Limassol (Cyprus) this summer. He has two goals in nine league games. His contract runs until the end of the season.
