Video game: Let’s not procrastinate, “Alan Wake 2” is a very great game

Having reached the end of the adventure, we remain stunned by the magnificent horror thriller from the Remedy studio.

Many sequences with Agent Saga Anderson take place in the dark and in the forest.

Graphics? Dazzling. Her? Intense. Gameplay? Solid. The writing, the narration? Never before seen at this level in a video game. Scenario? tormented and inventive. Directing actors (real on video and digital)? One of the best offered in its genre…

Having reached the end of “Alan Wake 2”, our opinion is made following a positive first impression: the latest from the Finnish studio Remedy is not only our game of the year, it is also a summit in this very particular format that is the video game.

This game is above all a form of achievement, a bit like all the other titles designed by Remedy, from the first two “Max Payne” to “Control” via “Quantum Break” and the first “Alan Wake” (2010) were ambitious and promising drafts. “Alan Wake 2” would be the miraculous synthesis which learned everything from the previous titles.

Bright Falls ou New York

In “Max Payne 2”, there is an investigation in Bright Falls of an FBI agent confronted with a murderous cult with a dark motive. There is also Max Payne, a writer of best sellers of horror, who disappeared 13 years ago, prisoner of the “black den”, a dimension in which certain neighborhoods of New York are haunted by specters. The two main characters are related. She wants to understand, he wants to escape. The trials they go through, each with a gameplay specific, are supposed to bring them together. And then there are some brilliant sequences, notably a song and dance chapter that resembles a dazzling number from a modern musical comedy.

We were carried away by a form of constant creative genius that only constraints linked to game mechanics (sometimes) slowed down. Because “Max Payne 2” remains above all a video game, you need a certain dexterity to move forward, reflexes too, and solid common sense for managing shortages. We need batteries for our flashlight and ammunition for weapons, otherwise the opponents will be happy to rush you towards the punishing “game over”. To the point that we would almost have liked some easier options: cartridges and infinite batteries for example. This is not the case. Those not accustomed to video games, attracted by the concept but perhaps lacking the experience, risk suffering a bit. We’ll have to deal with it.

Rare and precious

But one thing is certain, we have never seen such a concentration of talent and creativity. “Alan Wake 2” is scary. “Alan Wake 2” is intriguing. “Alan Wake 2” surprises. And sometimes “Alan Wake 2” even makes you smile. It’s a very great game in the same way that we say that this or that work by David Fincher or David Lynch might be a very great film.

Judged on its fun mechanics alone, “Alan Wake 2” is already considered one of the most beautiful games on this generation of machine (PC, PS5 and Xbox Series). But it offers so much more, a rare and precious vertigo, in which the sum of the parts combines so well that they form a superior title. This type of phenomenon is too rare not to be highlighted and then celebrated.
