The second round game in the DFB Cup between record winners Bayern Munich and third division club 1. FC Saarbrücken on Wednesday (8:45 p.m.) will take place as expected. Referee Frank Willenborg (Osnabrück) made this decision following an inspection of the pitch on Wednesday morning.
“The measures taken to make the pitch in Saarbrücken’s Ludwigsparkstadion usable are having an effect, the pitch has dried out significantly,” the city of Saarbrücken announced on Tuesday followingnoon following a review of the conditions by representatives of the state capital, the DFB and 1. FC Saarbrücken.
Bayern had been planning to arrive on match day for a long time anyway. “First of all, the principle of trust applies,” said coach Thomas Tuchel regarding a possible cancellation: “If the DFB decides with the referees that you can play, then we will assume that the conditions are normal.”
A move to another stadium was not organizationally possible at such short notice. The game has been sold out for weeks with 16,003 spectators.
