We are now in the second half of the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games and Canada continues to deliver brilliant performances!

Charles Philibert-Thiboutot led the charge for Canada in winning the country’s first medal in the discipline at these Games. Other athletes in sailing, equestrian sports, but also table tennis, softball and water polo are getting closer to the finals and, in some cases, qualification for Paris 2024.

Here are the best moments from the 11th day of competition:

Athletics: Silver for Philibert-Thiboutot

Charles Philibert-Thiboutot won the first Canadian medal in athletics at these Pan American Games thanks to his bronze medal in the 5000 m.

Philibert-Thiboutot remained well placed in third position in a race where the fairly slow pace meant that the eight athletes present in the final remained grouped together until the 600 m. He managed to hold off Altobeli Da Silva to the line to get on the podium.

Although the Canadian athlete was the third runner to cross the finish line, his bronze medal was converted into silver a few minutes later when the Mexican Fernando Martinez, who had finished first, was disqualified for obstructing and shoving an opponent.

The disqualification also allowed the American Kasey Knevelbaard to walk away with the gold medal. Da Silva completed the podium with bronze.

“It was a very tactical race,” said Philibert-Thiboutot following the final. Today, the goal was not to run fast, but rather to be in the Top 3 during the race, to fight to maintain my position to ensure I was well placed for the final sprint. I missed it a little in the last 100 meters, but I’m quite happy with my execution. »

For her part, Keira Christie-Galloway qualified for the women’s 100m hurdles final following placing third in her semi-final.

“I was both excited and anxious regarding my race,” Christie-Galloway said following securing her place in the final. “I put myself in the starting blocks and that’s when I realized I might do it because I had already done it before. It gave me a lot of confidence. »

The final will be presented tomorrow.

Table tennis: Zhang and Wang reach the semi-finals

After winning bronze in the mixed doubles, Mo Zhang and Eugene Wang both ensured they secured another medal in their individual events.

After a 4-1 victory in the round of 16, Zhang beat American Amy Wang 4-0 (11-7, 11-3, 11-7, 11-3) in the quarterfinals of the singles tournament. feminine.

“I found the right way to face it and I followed that plan,” admitted the Canadian, gold medalist at the Guadalajara 2011 Pan American Games.

In the semifinals, Zhang will face Adriana Diaz of Puerto Rico. The winner will have the chance to play for gold in the final.

On the men’s side, Wang also won his round of 16 match 4-1 before beating Nicolás Burgos of Chile, 4-2 (7-11, 11-7, 9-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-7, in the quarter-finals. The Canadian did not seem bothered by the crowd which was obviously in favor of the local favorite.

“He has unique skills that you don’t find in other players,” Wang revealed following his victory. I had to adjust during the first set, but from the second set, things were better. »

The bronze medalist at Toronto 2015 and Lima 2019 will face Cuban Andy Pereira Diaz in the semi-finals on Wednesday.

Equestrian sports: A promising first day at the jumps

After the dressage and eventing teams secured an Olympic qualification for the country, the show jumping squad began its first day of competition with the same goal in mind.

The Canadian team, composed of Beth Underhill (Nikka Vd Bisschop), Mario Deslauriers (Emerson), Amy Millar (Truman) and Tiffany Foster (Figor), ranked third following the first round. Their score of 9.62 places them behind Brazil (4.32) and Colombia (7.29). Three places for Paris 2024 are at stake in this Pan American Games event. Brazil has already secured its ticket to the Games at the final of the FEI Aerial Nations Cup. We will know if Canada has qualified tomorrow.

In the win, 17-year-old Morgan Reimer pitched three innings. According to Larissa Franklin, bronze medalist at Tokyo 2020, part of her motivation is to continue playing to witness the development of the next generation of Canadian players.

“It’s nice to see how energetic and excited they are to be playing on the biggest stage and reaching their full potential,” Franklin said. Morgan remained very calm and I’m really proud of her.”

Kianna Jones drove in four runs while Kelsey Harshman and Nicole Rivait drove in two runs each.
