Bundesliga soccer team WAC failed in the round of 16 of the ÖFB Cup. The Carinthians had to admit defeat to the second division team DSV Leoben 4:5 in a penalty shootout on Tuesday; following 90 and 120 minutes the score was 1:1. The Wolfsbergers are now without a win in four competition games. The shoot-out was quite dramatic, five shooters awarded their penalties – the last of them was Simon Piesinger, which sealed the end of the WAC.

In regular time, the guests were unlucky with a shot from Nikolas Veratschnig (33′), but then took the lead thanks to a deflected shot from Thierno Ballo (40′). After the break, Leoben managed to equalize thanks to Deni Alar (56th). A quarter of an hour later there was great excitement: First, the WAC unsuccessfully called for a red card for stealing a goal following an attack on Mohamed Bamba, and practically in return, Piesinger was shot in the hand by Alar from close range in his own penalty area.

Referee Julian Weinberger awarded a penalty, but Kevin Friesenbichler found his match in WAC goalkeeper Lukas Gütlbauer. In the course of these events, Wolfsberg coach Manfred Schmid was shown a red card due to criticism from the referee.
