Preventing Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Brussels Firefighters’ Life-Saving Rescues

Brussels firefighters rescued three people yesterday, all poisoned by carbon monoxide (CO), otherwise known as the silent killer. The first intervention took place yesterday evening around 8:40 p.m., rue de Birmingham in Anderlecht. An elderly person felt unwell. On site, firefighters noted that the CO level was far too high. They evacuated the people present in the apartment. The elderly person was transferred to hospital.

”The accommodation was not connected to gas and the occupants used gas cylinders for cooking. But, as the bottle was empty, they used a barbecue installed in the bathroom to cook, hence the production of CO,” explains Siamu. Which reminds us that you should never use a barbecue or brazier indoors, due to lack of evacuation of combustion gases, ventilation and lack of a supply of fresh air.

This morning, around 9:20 a.m., the firefighters intervened once more, rue de Ter Plast in Laeken this time, for a fall at home. On site, they noted the presence of two people on the ground, complaining of severe headaches, dizziness and nausea. Again, the CO level was far too high. Firefighters evacuated the couple and opened the windows.

”Quite high levels of carbon monoxide were measured. Gas was seeping into the home via cracks in the leaking chimney. Sibelga cut and sealed the building’s common boiler,” specifies Siamu. The two poisoning victims were taken to hospital. Fortunately the vital prognosis is not engaged.

Every year, several Brussels residents die from carbon monoxide poisoning.
