(Toronto) Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the province is extending a 5.7-cent gas tax cut until next summer.
The government launched this reduction in July 2022 and has extended it several times since.
This reduction and the 5.3 cent drop in the price of diesel fuel will remain in effect until June 30, 2024.
Mr. Ford first promised to reduce the price of gasoline by ten cents per liter during the 2018 election campaign.
At the time, Ontario’s Progressive Conservative Party clarified that this would be done by scrapping the province’s cap-and-trade system and reducing the gas tax.
The government ended cap-and-trade shortly following the 2018 election, which was supposed to lower prices by 4.3 cents per liter, but instead prompted the federal backstop to be put in place a carbon tax, thereby canceling out these savings. The Ford government attempted to challenge this tax in court, but was unsuccessful.
