In these painful moments, several options present themselves: it is possible to hand over your dead animal to the veterinarian or to a shelter so that the body is entrusted to an institution specializing in cremation, to have it removed by a rendering company or opt for burial in an animal cemetery.
For several years, this last option has met with growing popularity among the population and there are more and more municipalities offering this service.
One of the oldest animal cemeteries in Wallonia is located in Charleroi. It is managed by the SPA.
Belgians’ disinterest in All Saints’ Day is growing: 64% no longer go to the cemetery to pay their respects
“There are 300 graves which are all perfectly identical because we do not want to make a difference between the animals or between the more or less well-off owners. Besides that, we let the owners put what they want on the graves. maybe a plaque, a photo… I honestly think it’s a superb place for contemplation. We organize activities there where people can come and put flowers, lay down heather and reflect,” explains Franck Goffaux, president of the Charleroi SPA.
Bereaved owners also have the option of cremation. “This solution is becoming more and more successful. We can suggest that they place the ashes of their animal in a columbarium (editor’s note, a place intended to receive urns containing funeral ashes) or spread them on a lawn of remembrance,” continues Franck Goffaux.
Crazy funeral prices: “It’s a real concern for bereaved families”
However, having your pet buried or cremated is not free. At the Charleroi animal cemetery, it costs between 400 and 450 euros for a burial, the location in the cemetery, the commemorative plaque, etc. To this sum are added 60 euros per year for the concession.
What regarding a burial at the bottom of the garden? Many cats, dogs and goldfish are buried in gardens. However, this is not allowed everywhere. In the Brussels region, burying a dog or cat in your garden is purely and simply prohibited. In Wallonia, everything depends on the municipality.
Another interesting option: from September 2024, it will be possible to be buried with your animal in Wallonia as in Brussels, provided of course that the animal died before its owner.
