The Canary Islands have been experiencing a sharp increase in boat arrivals carrying irregular migrants since the beginning of October. According to the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, an increase of around 80 percent has been recorded so far in 2023 compared to the same period last year. Accordingly, a good 30,000 refugees arrived on the Atlantic archipelago this year, around 15,000 of them in October alone. The previous annual record (2006: 31,678) is likely to be exceeded in 2023.
