Around a hundred nurses take their first steps in the health network each year in Quebec.
To better train them and sometimes even reassure them, the CIUSSS de l’Ouest de l’île de Montréal relies on a mixed reality headset, which allows more experienced staff to help them remotely.
At the LaSalle intensive care unit in Montreal, young nurses who have just been recruited can quickly learn new techniques thanks to a mixed virtual headset.
The head of the unit or his assistant remains available almost at all times to guide them through the headset as if they were at their side. They see everything the nurses do during procedures and can guide them on what to do.
“At home I can connect via my Teams application to guide them in carrying out the treatment technique,” says Éric Labonté, head of intensive care at Lasalle Hospital. “In the last few months, we have had a big recruitment problem, we have had to recruit a lot of nurses with little or no experience, so that allows me to support their work.”
The project began at the beginning of August at LaSalle Hospital. Since then, around twenty nurses have used the headset.
“Putting in venous access, there was no one trained in the evening to do it, so we often had to wait until daylight to treat the patient,” explains Sabrina Marzeughi, clinical nurse at LaSalle Hospital. “The headset ensures that patients do not need to wait.”
Patients and their families welcome this new tool.
“I think technology is good, the more there is, the better,” says Lucette Lemelin while visiting a patient.
The device is manufactured by Microsoft and it is Auger Groupe Conseil’s responsibility to install “the solutions inside” and “make them easily usable by nursing staff,” says Hugo Lafontaine, vice-president of the division. Auger Consulting Group.
The Jewish General Hospital and the Lakeshore General Hospital are also participating in the Trois-Rivières company’s pilot project, which intends to prove its effectiveness in training nurses more quickly and efficiently in all hospital centers.
