Weight gain following menopause associated with increased risk of breast cancer
An American study published in 2020 established that reducing your weight following the age of fifty almost proportionally reduces the risk of developing breast cancer: up to minus 26% for every 9 kg lost. Conclusions which remove some of the fatality from this cancer, the most common in women, to close this month of “Pink October” campaign.
The overweight, defined as a BMI greater than 25, is a known risk factor for breast cancer, especially in postmenopausal women. Being overweight can also increase the risk of recurrence of breast cancer. Why ? Fat cells produce estrogen and can increase chronic low-grade inflammation, a more fertile breeding ground for cancer.
Until now, however, no research had established any numerical correlation between the extent of weight loss and the reduction in cancer risk.
Conducted among 180,885 women aged 50 and over in Australia, Asia and the United States, this observational study followed them for ten years, on the basis of three successive assessments: one at start-up, one following five years and the last four years later. The data collected seems to show that losing weight from the age of 50 reduces the risk of getting breast cancer. The greater the weight loss, the more this risk would decrease: minus 13% for a weight loss of 2 to 4.5 kgminus 16% for 4.5 to 9 kg lost, and minus 26% when the weight loss exceeds 9 kg.
The authors point out that women who have achieved the greatest weight loss, but have regained some of it – not all – still have a lower risk of breast cancer than those who have maintained their initial weight.
Losing weight following menopause isn’t always easy, but some tips can help. In light of this study, and even if it cannot demonstrate clear causality, it may be worth it when you are overweight to be attentive to your diet at this period of life, because in addition to Limiting your cardiovascular risks can ward off the specter of breast cancer from the lasting loss of the first two kilos.
