What has the horror film year 2023 brought so far? The time around Halloween is a fitting time to look back on it. There were sequels to big franchises like „Scream 6“, „Saw X“ or “The Exorcist – Confession”. But we prefer to spread a cloak of silence regarding the latter. It was the year of „Cocaine Bear“ and the year of fine indie gems like „Talk to Me“, Skinamarink, „Infinity Pool“ or just „Pearl“. Actress Mia Goth teaches us fear in two of these films (“Infinity Pool” and “Pearl”) and does so in such a remarkable way that she probably has to be given the title of Scream Queen of the Year.

For this year’s Halloween special FM4 Film Podcast We also invited two special guests: Magdalena Pichler and Michael Wienicki from our favorite horror bastion, the Wiener Slash Film Festival. Together with you, we will review the horror film year 2023 so far, including the films mentioned above. But they also each picked up two film tips that are perfect for Halloween and that we would like to briefly introduce to you here.

Terrified / Aterrados (2017)
Strange events and deaths are increasingly occurring in a neighborhood in Buenos Aires. A parapsychologist and an ex-police officer decide to investigate. The Argentinian horror film “Terrified” by Demián Rugna is a small, raw film that manages to create a maximally frightening atmosphere from the first second, which continues to increase. Nerves of steel are an advantage.
The Ring (2002)
The US remake of the Japanese film “Ringu”, like the original, has long been one of the horror film classics. A mysterious VHS tape, a fountain and a girl with long black hair. The rest is film history.

Trick’r’Treat (2007)
If you’re not in the mood for John Carpenter’s “Halloween,” then this film is the perfect alternative for October 31st. “Trick’r’Treat” consists of skillfully interwoven Halloween horror stories, each stranger than the last. At the center of the action is the candy hunter Sam, a strange little figure with a jute sack pulled over his head.
Ghostwatch (1992)
Ghostwatch is a British horror mockumentary. In 1992, the TV film was broadcast on the BBC disguised as live reporting and presented paranormal phenomena. Taken at face value, the film caused panic among television audiences at the time.
