Quebec Launches Accelerated Construction Worker Training Program: Learn How to Alleviate the Labor Shortage

2023-10-30 09:00:00

To alleviate the labor shortage on construction sites, Quebec is launching an offensive to train 4,000 to 5,000 construction workers by the summer. An accelerated course paid at $25 per hour on average will be offered to attract aspiring workers, we learned The newspaper.

After beneficiary attendants during the pandemic, it is the turn of construction workers to benefit from a fast and paid route to the job market.

The crying need for new schools, housing, daycare centers, seniors’ homes and roads forces the Legault government to resort to exceptional recruitment means.

According to our information, accelerated training of four to six months will begin in January for five construction trades. Quebec is seriously lacking in carpenters, excavator operators, heavy equipment operators, tinsmiths and refrigeration workers. But be careful, those interested must decide and register by December 15, we are told.

The Prime Minister will announce the details today at a press conference. He will be accompanied for the occasion by ministers Bernard Drainville, Jean Boulet and Kateri Champagne Jourdain.

Like the PABs

At the CAQ back-to-school caucus at the beginning of September, François Legault made no secret of his intention to take inspiration from the PAB to massively direct workers to the construction industry.

The Prime Minister said he wanted rapid results on construction sites, and for a cohort to be ready for the next summer season.

During the pandemic, accelerated training aimed at training 10,000 agents was paid $21 per hour.

The course for aspiring workers will be paid an average of $25 per hour, or $750 per week. This is the same salary as an apprentice entering the job market in the construction industry. This time, we hope to train between 4,000 and 5,000 workers.

Graduation scholarships

In order not to siphon off the current programs leading to the professional studies diploma (DEP) in the five targeted construction trades, graduation scholarships ranging from $9,000 to $15,000 will be offered to apprentice workers who will begin their training in November, December or January, according to a government source.

And in order not to undermine other critical sectors, such as the pipefitter or electrician professions, Quebec will have to increase the reception capacities of DEPs leading to these specialties. Currently, there is a waiting list to access these two professional training courses.

This recruitment offensive is in addition to the reform of the construction industry that will be led by the Minister of Labor, Jean Boulet. The latter wants to put an end to the preserves and allow certain tasks of around fifteen construction trades to be shared, to reduce delays and reduce costs.
