Cardiac arrest – how a police officer saved the life of a Salzburg woman as a first aider

The patient was unresponsive and was no longer breathing. Planitzer identified the patient as suffering from cardiac arrest immediately upon his arrival. Relying on his expertise and years of experience as an emergency paramedic, the first responder knew how to react and immediately began resuscitation. At the same time, his colleagues called an ambulance and helped him treat the patient.

When the emergency medical team arrived a few minutes later, they took over further care. The police officers helped transport the patient into the ambulance and guided the ambulance through traffic to enable rapid transport to the hospital.

Survived without any consequential damage thanks to quick first aid

The redeeming news soon came from the patient’s sons: They thanked Planitzer and his colleagues for the quick first aid. Her mother was discharged from the hospital following two weeks without any complications.
“For me, this operation was an impressive confirmation of how valuable the lifesaver app is. In an emergency, every minute counts and thanks to the alert via the app, I was able to be on site very quickly and provide first aid. I am particularly pleased “Of course, that the patient has fully recovered,” said Planitzer.
The lady’s sons were relieved and happy regarding the quick help and the successful rescue chain. “Mr. Planitzer and his colleagues were on site so quickly and began caring for our mother. He played a major role in ensuring that she recovered completely,” said Alfred Pfisterer on behalf of the family.

“Team Austria Life Saver” project has been in operation for a year

In the event of respiratory arrest, every minute counts – and help is often just a few meters away. The “Team Austria Life Saver” initiative, which the Austrian Red Cross launched with Hitradio Ö3 in 2007, uses this advantage. The gradual expansion of the project has also been underway in Salzburg for around a year.
If an emergency call is received, the rescue control center now not only alerts the emergency services via app but also registered volunteer first aiders who are in the immediate vicinity of the scene. This means you can begin chest compressions before the emergency services or first responders arrive.

Important piece of the puzzle in emergency care

“The ‘Team Austria Lifesavers’ are another important piece of the puzzle for rapid medical first aid in an emergency,” explains state rescue commander Stefan Herbst. State police director Bernhard Rausch is pleased regarding the life-saving by a Salzburg police officer: “I see the life-saving app as absolutely positive. If police officers get involved in this project and can therefore intervene immediately in an emergency, this represents a valuable contribution to health and safety of the population. I am very pleased when we as the Salzburg police work so closely with the emergency services.”

Volunteering for your fellow human beings

In the first expansion stage of the project, trained rescue and emergency paramedics as well as emergency doctors can register as “Team Austria Lifesavers”. Many of them are already volunteering in the rescue service – and are willing to also volunteer as a “Team Austria Lifesaver”. “This commitment cannot be appreciated enough,” says Stefan Herbst. “I would like to thank all the “Team Austria Lifesavers” from the bottom of my heart!” After a successful evaluation, the project will be rolled out to an expanded first responder group.
