Mendoza firefighters face two fire outbreaks in the foothills. One, which began on Saturday night in El Challao. The other, which broke out this Sunday followingnoon in Luján de Cuyo. In both situations there is a key factor that can help or, on the contrary, worsen the fight once morest flames: the wind.
The fire in Luján is the one that advanced the most on Sunday night and the first minutes of Monday. Initially, the flames began in the El Peral area, above the neighborhoods of the Vertientes de Pedemonte district – located in front of the Desert event hall -, with a frontage of 200 meters.
But, in a statement published following midnight, the municipality of Luján de Cuyo confirmed that they are fighting on more than ten fronts.
Due to this, an evacuation system with mobility and resources was organized. So far, beyond the neighbors who live in that area and who decided to leave due to the prevailing smoke, it was learned that they had evacuated at least four neighborhoods: Sierras de Encalada, Magdalena, Los Cóndores and Angélica.
This is how the igneous sources might be seen from the Luján de Cuyo Distillery:
The volunteer firefighters of the municipality have in turn received the support of their peers from Maipú and those from Tunuyán were regarding to join, along with the resources provided by Civil Defense.
However, the decisive issue for close combat with fire was the weather conditions. Specifically, the direction and intensity of the wind, which in that area to the southwest of Luján, was still important.
To have a dimension, these were the bursts taken by a camera in Luján:
Therefore, without the possibility of having air support at night, as happened in El Challao during the followingnoon, fighting was carried out according to what the conditions of the fire and the terrain permitted.
The only hope, in what seems to be a long night, was for the wind to decrease its intensity, waiting for the hydrant planes in the morning.
