Belgians spent 7.9 billion euros online during the first half of 2023, representing an increase of 9.4% compared to last year, BeCommerce, the Belgian e-commerce federation, said on Thursday. -trade. Purchases made from Belgian online stores amount to 83 million euros.
The products that saw the largest increase in online purchases, in terms of value, were sports and leisure (17.7%), followed by telecommunications (16.9%) and household appliances (8. 8%). Regarding the number of transactions by category, leisure remains the dominant category (20.3%), followed by home and garden products (15.4%) and media and entertainment (9.9%).
For the first time, the services sector has also surpassed that of consumer goods. Belgians have in fact spent 4 billion euros on online platforms for services, which represents an increase of 20% compared to the same period last year. Such a phenomenon was particularly observed for purchases linked to public transport and insurance.
Nearly 45% of Belgian SMEs indicate that they make sales via a digital channel. A quarter of them see their sales increase by launching into online commerce, while 14% say they are able to create more jobs thanks to it.
In 2022, Belgium had 56,642 online stores: 71% of them are located in Flanders, 9% in Brussels and 20% in Wallonia. A breakdown by province also shows that Antwerp is the one with the largest number of e-commerce platforms (19%).
