Electrohypersensitivity: Coping with the Dangers of Artificial Electromagnetic Waves

“I had just received a package and when I opened the door, I saw a pheasant nearby and it was because I lingered to observe the pheasant that I heard cries,” explains Nicolas Legrand who rushes towards the place where the screams were coming from. And there, the Bousvalien sees his own mother, lying on the ground, with her dog who is trying to defend once morest a “big black ball”: “I ran and shouted and that must have frightened the aggressor dog who moved away , continues Nicolas. In my mind, it was a big black ball and at first, as I didn’t see anyone, I thought I was dealing with a stray dog but a person came closer. It was a lady who smoked and who was the dog’s owner. She never made the slightest move to catch up with her dog.”

Where the facts go wrong is that Nicolas suffers from electrohypersensitivity (EHS) and cannot go near a smartphone. It’s impossible for him to call for help since he doesn’t have a phone: “As the dog’s owner didn’t move, I stopped the delivery man with whom I had just been in contact and who was passing by once more to Ask him to call for help.”

The delivery man complies, the police arrive… and if everything is not resolved given that the lady has also filed a complaint given that she herself felt attacked, Nicolas Legrand intends to testify to the difficulty of experiencing such moments when you are “electrohypersensitive”: “If the delivery man doesn’t come, what do I do? The fact of not having a mobile phone clearly penalized me. EHS disease is not recognized even though there are hundreds of us suffer from it, continues the Bousvalien who admits that he still has not recovered from this sad episode. When I usually go out, I put on a hat and an anti-wave sweater and I have to take anti-blood thinners and other supplements half an hour before my exit . There, I rushed without taking the slightest precaution.”

In Nicolas, as in all EHS, the body is unable to defend itself from the stress caused by the waves. These then cause the appearance of acute symptoms: headaches, sleep problems, tinnitus, reduced concentration and memory, palpitations, muscle pain, abnormal fatigue, etc.

Avoid artificial electromagnetic waves

Electrohypersensitivity is still poorly understood and forces those who suffer from it to look for white areas in order to avoid as much as possible the artificial electromagnetic waves to which we are nevertheless increasingly exposed. And these waves are proliferating given wireless technologies (GSM, smartphones, wifi, relay antennas, fixed wireless DECT telephones, smart meters, connected objects, etc.).

An association, AREHS (Association for the Recognition of Electrohypersensitivity) defends the rights of EHS patients.

“I have suffered from it since I was 21,” complains Nicolas, who is 48 today and who had to give up his work as a specialized educator with death in his soul. And it’s only been a few years since we were able to put a word on the suffering. In addition, I have an abnormal quantity of lead and mercury in my body, due to the fact that my mother was a gold miner in Brazil (Editor’s note: Nicolas was adopted). Which is not doesn’t fix my health problems.”

“The feeling of burning on the spot”

He admits to having his “brain in pieces” since the attack: “I sometimes have the feeling of burning on the spot”, he adds while today, leaving the four walls of his home becomes a path of cross: “I only go out once a week to shop for organic and fresh products and once a week to go for a little walk. At home, everything is wired and everything, absolutely everything, is connected to the earth In addition, you have to follow a drastic diet. I have a list of foods as long as my arm that I cannot eat, we have to avoid all pesticides, dress in anti-wave clothing and even my bed is equipped with ‘a canopy with a sheet that goes to the ground to avoid the waves which are omnipresent in our environment.’

The list of medications and food supplements that he must take is also very long: “In addition, all of this is very expensive. An anti-wave sweater can cost more than €250, but as the disease is not recognized, we cannot receives no help.”

As for her mother, she has been recovering slowly since the incident: “I arrived in time and she is mainly suffering from psychological following-effects. For my part, as I told you, I still have not recovered. And then, this mishap shows that we do not have the means to call for help when we find ourselves outside.”

This little-known disease affects between 1 and 10% of the population in Belgium.
