The color of the jerseys remained the same but the setting and the actors were turned upside down. This followingnoon (4 p.m.), at the Montjuic stadium – where Barça are playing this season while the Spotify Camp Nou is getting a complete facelift – there will only be one Ballon d’Or (Luka Modric) and one world champion (Toni Kroos) on the scoresheet. The biggest name in this Barça-Real Clasico, that of the former Blaugrana metronome Xavi, is now active in front of the Catalan bench.

There are no more Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Andrés Iniesta, Sergio Ramos, Sergio Busquets, Karim Benzema, Marcelo or Pepe, all of whom left to export their talent to footballingly exotic countries or returned to fold. Others have retired, like Gerard Piqué, Gareth Bale, while Dani Alves is… in prison.
