Great Wall Motor – interim results and a couple of announcements

The Chinese corporation Great Wall Motor, which owns the Haval, Tank and GWM Poer automobile brands, held a press conference this week at which it shared the interim results of its work in Russia and made several announcements.

First, let’s go through the numbers. For 9 months of 2023, the company was able to sell a total of more than 84,500 cars in our country. At the same time, sales in 2022 amounted to only 33,642 vehicles. The best-selling model of the concern was the city crossover Haval Jolion, which sold 36,430 copies, this is the bestseller of the brand and the entire holding. With a noticeable lag in second place are the Haval F7/F7x models, whose total sales amounted to 21,340 units. And third place is occupied by Haval Dargo; our compatriots purchased 9,769 such crossovers during this period.

It was also interesting to look at the sales figures for cars of the company’s new sub-brand Tank, two models of which (Tank 300 and Tank 500) arrived in showrooms at the beginning of the year. Total sales of the brand amounted to 7,577 cars, which is quite good for a newcomer. Here, apparently, the participation of Tank 500 in the May 9 celebrations helped, when this vehicle was used to transport foreign guests and it was shown on all federal channels, which had a positive effect on the recognition and perception of the new brand.

The Great Wall Motor concern dominates our market in sales of pickup trucks, a rather narrow but still in-demand market. Thus, having in its arsenal two current models GWM Poer and Poer KinKong, the manufacturer managed to sell a total of 3,535 such cars. Here, apparently, the manufacturer played into the hands of the fact that before all the events he was present on our market with models in the back of a pickup truck, and following that he was the first to bring two current and fresh cars to our market, while competitors were only thinking regarding such a possibility.

I think it’s no secret that Great Wall Motor in the Tula region has its own car production plant, in this case the Haval brand. By the way, it became the brand’s first plant outside of China; later the manufacturer opened factories in Thailand and Brazil. During the press conference, representatives of the brand reported that the company is expanding its presence in our market and has already completed the construction of an engine production plant (which the Koreans from Hyundai did not manage to do), which is also located near Tula. Today, the automaker is waiting for permitting documentation to put the plant into operation, and plans to launch production at the beginning of 2024. The expected volume will be 80,000 engines per year. Thus, Great Wall Motor in Russia will have almost a full cycle of car production, which, in a good way, should affect the price of products and make the same Haval more affordable compared to competitors.

In addition, during the press conference, the start of sales of the new electric car Ora 03 and its “sports” version Ora 03 GT in Russia was announced. The car received an electric motor with a power of 126 kW or 171 hp, its maximum speed is 150 km/h, and the declared range reaches 500 km. Acceleration of a compact electric car to 100 km/h takes 7.6 seconds, which is very good. A 63.1 kWh battery is installed under the bottom of the electric vehicle, which can be replenished from 15% to 80% from fast charging in just 42 minutes.

The price of the new product will be 3,899,000 rubles for the regular version and 3,999,000 rubles for the GT. The compact car’s equipment is very rich, it has almost all driver assistants, a panoramic roof, massage and ventilation of the front seats, and wireless charging. The media system with a 10.25-inch display supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the latter will appear in March 2024. The car is distinguished by its unusual appearance in a retro style, everything in the interior is also decorated in the appropriate theme, there are even toggle switches on the front panel, like in a Mini. In addition, Ora 03 passed the Euro NCAP test, which resulted in 5 stars for safety.

But the company’s announcements did not end there; it was announced that at the beginning of 2024 another sub-brand of the concern – Wey – would come to Russia. The first model of the new brand will be the Wey 05 hybrid crossover, which will receive two electric motors and an internal combustion engine with a total power of 295 hp, which allows the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5 seconds. At the same time, the declared fuel consumption will be 7.7 liters per 100 km, apparently in the combined driving cycle. The Wey brand will be closer to premium, so in the crossover we will see improved materials, adaptive LED optics, hidden door handles, 21st wheels, projection onto the windshield and touch screens with vibration response (hello, Audi). Regarding safety, the Wey 05 is equipped with 8 airbags, it has high body rigidity, and the Euro NCAP test was passed with 5 stars.

Well, Great Wall Motor is demonstrating very impressive results in our market. There is hope that deeper localization of production will affect the prices of the brand’s cars and Haval will become a little more affordable in order to win over competitors. The appearance of electric vehicles under the Ora brand will allow the company to increase its presence in the market; besides, sales of electric vehicles are slowly but surely going up. At the end of eight months of this year, the volume of the Russian electric car market amounted to 7,000 units, which is 4.4 times more than for the same period in 2022. And entering the market with a hybrid is quite expected, since there is also a demand for such cars, and competitors have already begun to import their models to us.
