Aurélien Rousseau, Minister of Health and Prevention, concluded this Wednesday, October 25, 2023, the meetings of the First Aid in Mental Health (PSSM) France association, which were hosted at the ministry, in the presence of the founding members: the Union national of families and friends of people

mentally ill and/or disabled (Unafam), the professional training organization specializing in mental health (INFIPP) and the “Santé Mentale France” Federation.

Mental health first aid is a process of training volunteer citizen first aiders in order to better identify mental health disorders, adopt appropriate behavior, provide information on available resources, encourage them to contact the appropriate professionals and, in the event of a crisis, take action. to relay to the most suitable service.

Minister Aurélien Rousseau made a point during these meetings to salute “the civic commitment of the rescuers, who carry out a mission of general interest”. He also recalled that mental health was a priority for the Government.

Strong action taken by the Government

The Ministry of Health and Prevention has chosen to widely deploy this training which provides a response to the increase in psychological disorders within society. This priority action was retained:

  • During the 2021 “Mental Health and Psychiatry Conference”;
  • In the conclusions of the National Council for Refoundation (CNR) on youth;
  • In the interministerial plan to combat bullying at school, presented under the authority of the Prime Minister on September 27.

This mobilization is also linked to the National Suicide Prevention Strategyimplemented as close as possible to people at risk and their loved ones.

In the coming months, the National Council for Mental Health Refoundationannounced by the President of the Republic, will more broadly be the moment, in a multi-party framework, to identify territorial initiatives which have positive results and to work on innovation in mental health.

Already 75,000 first aiders trained in France

Mental health first aid training is aimed at everyone, without any prerequisites and also contributes to the destigmatization of mental disorders and the promotion of health, in a global and participatory approach.

Thanks to the joint efforts of the Ministry of Health and Prevention, with Health Insurance, regional health agencies, associations and all ministries, in particular those of Justice and the Civil Service, the target of Meeting of 60,000 first aiders trained in France at the end of 2023 was reached and exceeded six months in advance, with 75,000 first aiders trained and ready to provide initial aid throughout France.
