Conor Garland’s situation in Vancouver is special.
We are talking here regarding a player who has great offensive skills… But we are talking regarding a player who seems to be paid too much for what he can bring to a National League team.
Let us remember, for all intents and purposes, that he receives a salary of $4.95 million per year and that his contract will end at the end of the 25-26 season.
The Canucks have tried numerous times to trade him in recent months, but it is his contract that complicates the situation. It is especially with this in mind that Patrik Alvin (club CEO) is seeking to find a third team to facilitate the transaction in terms of salary.
David Pagnotta wrote in a recent article that the Ducks, Flyers, Sharks and CH are clubs that might be interested in being involved as the “third party” in a transaction…
And on this subject, the NHL Network informant believes that these teams have discussed with the Canucks regarding the small offensive forward:
I believe all four teams have been in talks with the Vancouver Canucks regarding the Conor Garland situation. –David Pagnotta

It’s intriguing.
Kent Hughes has proven in the past that he is a creative GM and is not afraid to think outside the box in order to improve his club’s situation, whether in the short, medium or long term .
That said… The Canadian is already retaining part of the salary of Jeff Petry (until July 2025) and Joel Edmundson (until July 2024).
Considering that an NHL team can only keep salary on three contracts at a time, that would limit Hughes a little since we are still far from the trade deadline and the 2024 draft.
We know to what extent it can brew quite quickly at deadline and at draft…And it is for this reason that I believe that Kent Hughes will want to give himself a certain freedom.
Add to all this the fact that Garland’s contract ends in two years… In my eyes, Kent Hughes will have to receive more than interesting compensation in order to dance with the Canucks as the third team involved in the transaction.
The general manager of the Canadiens is intelligent. He won’t get into trouble to please anyone and that’s not his job either.
If he feels that being involved in a Conor Garland trade can help the team, he’ll definitely do it. But at the moment, let’s say that there is nothing that would allow the CH to have an advantage in the situation… Unless the Canucks offer a piece that the Montreal GM cannot refuse.
