Nearly two years following the scandals which shook French nursing homes, new revelations are undermining the establishments. The private group Medicharme is on the verge of bankruptcy, undermined by poor results and complaints of mistreatment.

In January 2022 the investigation book was published The Gravediggers by journalist Victor Castanet, who revealed the financial embezzlement and mistreatment inflicted on residents of the Orpea group’s nursing homes. Since then, the ramifications have been numerous, forcing politicians to address the issue.

This Thursday, October 26 once more, a magazine survey 60 Million consumers points to poor quality of meals in nursing homes, which would endanger the health of residents. It also reveals that the Emera group, which has around forty establishments, is the target of a complaint filed at the beginning of October for mistreatment and lack of care.

Two inspection missions

The same day, an investigation by Le Parisien revealed dysfunctions within the Medicharme group, a private group which employs 1,300 employees and accommodates 2,000 residents.

Despite its 43 establishments, the group has seen its occupancy rate drop and has been in cessation of payments since the end of 2022. The company now risks judicial liquidation, according to our colleagues.

The Medicharme group is targeted by two inspection missions, one from the IGF (General Inspectorate of Finances) and the other from the Igas (General Inspectorate of Social Affairs). In a press release published this Friday, October 27, the Ministry of Solidarity and Families mentions “difficulties at the operational level” within the group.

They will look in particular at its “commercial and financial practices”, its “managerial practices” and the “effective presence time of staff” with residents, as well as its “modalities for reporting” incidents, indicates a press release from the ministry. Solidarity.

The results of the double mission are expected “at the beginning of 2024”, explained the ministry daily, noting “both health and financial issues have been identified in the management of this company”.

Complaints of mistreatment

On the financial side, surplus allocations which would have been paid by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Regional Health Agency to an Ehpad in Deux-Sèvres between 2022 and 2023 raise questions. At the beginning of October, the federations of private and public nursing homes had also sounded the alarm regarding their financial health, compromised by inflation and other factors such as the drop in the occupancy rate, due to the Covid crises. and Orpea.

On the health side, complaints of mistreatment have been filed by families in Deux-Sèvres and Lot-et-Garonne.
