Ending Unjustified Service Fees: Promoting Fair Competition and Consumer Protection in Digital Markets

As such, the Council invited the companies and institutions concerned to put an end to this practice which goes once morest efforts to develop the digitalization of our economy and undermines the purchasing power of consumers. Following this, and in coordination with the supervisory and sectoral regulatory authorities, several discussion sessions and coordination meetings were held in particular with the operators and institutions concerned by the aforementioned practice with a view to guaranteeing the conformity of their activities in accordance with the legislative provisions in force in this area.

All these efforts have led to the cessation of the practice of billing customers, unjustified service fees by partners of companies operating in the telecommunications sector, private educational establishments, delegated management companies and management companies. water and electricity distribution network as well as the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE). This approach also made it possible to obtain a commitment from other State services to put an end to the said practice from the year 2024, for considerations linked to annual budget programming.

On this occasion, the Competition Council wishes to underline, in a press release, the positive spirit which has marked this entire process, as well as the responsiveness and constructive cooperation of all stakeholders to find adequate solutions, particularly the supervisory and regulatory authorities of the sectors concerned, economic operators and institutions issuing invoices with payment via the internet, the Professional Group of Banks of Morocco, Banks, and payment establishments. Finally, and in order to consolidate these actions and promote healthy and fair competition in digital markets in Morocco, while ensuring consumer protection, the Competition Council will ensure regular monitoring of said markets.
