A Pokémon card that could earn him big

A rare Pokémon card might bring big returns to a Gatineau collector. It allowed it to attract the attention of the Goldin company, which was the subject of the Collector series on Netflix, which plans to put it up for auction. Due to its good condition and its rarity, its card might be coveted by many collectors ready to take out the checkbook.

Marc Gauthier, who has been collecting Pokémon cards since the late 90s, recently purchased the Grayscale Pokéball. Its owner reports that it is considered the largest error card ever printed.

There are only 19 cards of this kind, but it is the only one to be rated 8.5 by the grading company CGC. The card even caught the attention of Goldin Auctions from the popular Netflix series King of collectibles : The Goldin Touch. The Gatineau resident indicates that he has signed a contract with the American company to put his card up for auction in December.

An expert, however, believes that his association with Goldin will allow him to reach collectors interested in this type of error card.

We are talking regarding a niche market within a niche market. So we really are in the 1% of serious collectors who will want to buy this piece.

-Dave Doyon, owner of Imaginaire boutiques

Another owner of a specialized store in Gatineau, who has never seen such a card, expects it to provoke several bidding wars.

It’s guaranteed that the world will bid on it. It’s going to fight to get it.

-Éric Maltais, manager-owner of the FDB boutique

One of the experts we met believes that the card might sell for more than $10,000. Another estimates it might sell for between $200,000 and $1 million.

To date, the most expensive Pokémon card sold, the only Pikachu Illustrator graded 10, was acquired for more than US$5 million. On the other hand, with his card, Marc Gauthier does not want to get too carried away and he says that he would be satisfied if it went for $1,000 or $2,000.

It’s not the amount of money per se. […] Once you have it, you want to move on to the next (card) that you would like to have that you don’t have.
