The average income of Belgians (net taxable) amounted to 20,357 euros in 2021, compared to 19,671 a year earlier. This is what Statbel reveals, which is publishing new information this Thursday on the 2022 tax year*.

Regional disparities remained significant. Flanders was the richest, ahead of Wallonia and Brussels. With an amount of 21,776 euros, the average income of the Flemings exceeded the national average by 7%. The inhabitants of the Walloon Region and the Brussels-Capital Region had significantly less financial means. Thus, the average income of Walloons (19,192 euros) was 5.7% below the Belgian average, while Brussels residents (16,068 euros) had to make do with 21.1% less on an annual basis.

Laethem-Saint-Martin, the richest municipality

Flemish Brabant (23,527 euros) topped the ranking of average income per capita at the provincial level, ahead of Walloon Brabant (23,442 euros) and East Flanders (22,073 euros).

Laethem-Saint-Martin once once more occupied the first position of the richest municipalities, with incomes 63.3% higher than the national average. The first Walloon was Lasne, in sixth place (29,530 euros per inhabitant).

Conversely, Saint-Josse-ten-Noode was the municipality where the average income was the lowest (-45.6% compared to the national average). Belgium has six other municipalities whose average income per capita is at least 30% below the national average: Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Anderlecht, Farciennes, Dison, Koekelberg and Schaerbeek.
