Kairo (ots/PRNewswire) – At the UNESCO-Huawei International Forum on Digital Platforms and Competencies for Teachers yesterday, Egypt’s Ministry of Education officially launched the National Distance Learning Center for the Continuous Professional Development Development of Educators) opened.
The learning center was established as part of the UNESCO-Huawei project Technology-enabled open schools for all developed that will run from 2020 to 2023 in Egypt, Ghana and Ethiopia.
At the beginning of his speech, Dr. Reda Hegazy, Minister of Education and Technical Education, expressed his joy at participating in the forum and expressed his thanks and appreciation to UNESCO and Huawei for their support and for choosing Egypt as a partner in the Open Schools project.
He also praised the achievements of the Open Schools project in collaboration with the Professional Academy for Teachers and the UNESCO Cairo Office: “The Open Schools program has achieved considerable success in the education sector in Egypt in terms of capacity building and the preparation of training courses for teachers, various digital platforms and the establishment of the National Center for Distance Education to improve the skills of educators in Egypt.”
Technology-enabled Open Schools for All (TeOSS)
In addition to the launch of the Learning Center, the forum examined best practices related to the TeOSS project. The UNESCO-Huawei-TeOSS is being implemented in partnership with the ministries of education in Egypt, Ethiopia and Ghana and is testing digital education platforms in the three African countries. In addition, it provides digital skills training to teachers and students, develops policy frameworks for digital education, and evaluates the effectiveness of the project to expand TeOSS to other countries in Africa.
In Egypt, for example, the project trained 300 teachers in digital skills. The new learning center will increase distance learning and digital literacy opportunities for 950,000 K-12 educators in underserved communities.
In his speech, Sobhi Tawil, Director of the Future of Learning and Innovation Team at UNESCO, welcomed the participants of the forum and praised the collaboration with the Ministry of Education in Egypt and its role in supporting future horizons.
He added that the forum has been held as part of the Huawei Project to Enable Open Schools and Improve Digital Learning Skills since 2020 and has helped improve the quality of education and increase access and continuity of education in Egypt, Ethiopia and Ghana and that Egypt was one of the first countries to implement the digital learning initiative. He also pointed out that the opening of the National Center for Distance Education in Egypt represents a major step in digital transformation.
The TeOSS project is designed to combine online and offline learning to maximize learning success and ensure continuity of learning in both normal and crisis conditions. UNICEF Ocean For example, in January 2022, more than 616 million students were affected by complete or partial school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Building digital education capacity at national level can help mitigate disruptions to learning during unforeseen events.
Huawei’s participation in this project falls under its long-term digital inclusion and sustainability initiative, TECH4ALL. TECH4ALL’s education arm is committed to developing technology-driven solutions that can contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal (Goal 4): ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning for all.

In addition to the launch of the Learning Center and the TeOSS project, the two-day forum covered best practices for building digital platforms and teacher skills, international exchange of resources and expanding collaboration in digital education. The forum was attended by government ministers and high-level representatives from Egypt, Ethiopia and Ghana, representatives from UNESCO and Huawei, as well as TeOSS partners and international experts.
