Was it a heart attack? Cycling talent dies at 20 years old
The Dutchman Mark Groeneveld from the Continental team X-Speed United died a day following a race in Hong Kong. The reason for his death is not yet clear.

It is not yet clear why Groeneveld died.
The cycling world mourns the loss of a young talent. Mark Groeneveld, a budding young athlete from the Netherlands from the X-Speed United cycling team, died in the middle of the week at the age of 20. His last race was in Hong Kong, which he did not finish.
His team reacted with shock on social media: “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of Mark Groeneveld, who died during a project in Hong Kong. The world has lost another great soul.” Deepest condolences are expressed to the family, team members and friends. He continued: “We understand that this is an incredibly difficult time and we encourage you to reach out to us if you need help or emotional support. Your well-being is of the utmost importance to us.”
Cause of death not yet entirely clear
Groeneveld was “an incredible person and a valued member of our team”. He had a remarkable spirit and was always ready to help behind the scenes with his infectious smile and warm-hearted nature.
It is currently not known why Groeneveld died. X-Speed United said: “The circumstances surrounding Mark’s death are still under investigation, but we have received initial information indicating that it may have been a heart attack.” They would work closely with the relevant authorities to gather all the facts. “We will provide Mark’s family with the necessary support during this painful time,” said the team.
