Deltrian’s Liquidation Auction: 165,000 Masks and Production Line Assets at Unbelievable Prices

2023-10-25 19:06:59

165,000 masks, starting price: 110 euros. Four production lines (purchased a few years ago for more than 100,000 euros), starting price: 800 euros.

The legal procedure for liquidation of the mask division of the Deltrian company continues with the online sale of stocks to satisfy creditors. The auctioning of the assets of a company in liquidation or bankruptcy is not exceptional in itself, but the symbol is strong in the case of Deltrian. The symbol of the failure of a long-term relocation strategy.

When it was inaugurated three years ago, this “made in Wallonia” mask production sector was in fact widely praised by the Walloon government, which recalled the “vital” importance for the Region of being able to be “autonomous in areas that are also essential for health, during and following the crisis.” Three years later, the only mass production tool for masks in Wallonia was put into liquidation and its production lines were sold at ridiculous prices.

After the health crisis, demand for masks collapsed and Asian masks became cheaper once more. A public contract entrusted to Aviq, the health agency in Wallonia, was launched in 2022 to ensure a strategic reserve in the event of a new pandemic. But Deltrian did not win this market, which signed the death warrant for its mask division. “It was no longer possible to keep a tool that was no longer profitable. No one was buying anymore, we obviously weren’t going to produce stock unnecessarily “just in case”, without being certain that it would find a buyer.“, explains Jean Kalyvas, communications and marketing manager at Deltrian. Conclusion: in the event of a new pandemic, the Region will not be able to directly rely on a Walloon company to ensure its security of supply.
