SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Luka Doncic had 33 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists for the Dallas Mavericks, who spoiled the debut of top draft pick Victor Wembanyama by beating the San Antonio Spurs 126-119 on Wednesday.
Dallas forced two turnovers in the final minute to preserve the victory. Mavs point guard Kyrie Irving added 22 points, while Grant Williams scored 17, in the first game of the season for both teams.
Devin Vassell scored 23 points to lead San Antonio. Keldon Johnson added 17 and Wembanyama had 15.
Wembanyama scored nine points in the first seven minutes following dealing with foul trouble in the fourth quarter. The rookie made six of nine shots from the field and also added five rebounds, two assists and a block in 23 minutes.
Doncic was cleared to play an hour before the game. The Slovenian star had been included in the list of doubtful players due to a sprained left calf, and played 32 minutes.
Wembanyama dazzled in the preseason, but never accumulated fouls like he did once morest the Mavs. And Dallas took advantage of it.
