For Cybermoi/s, Kaspersky and L’ADN are joining forces to give you the best weapons to fight once morest a phenomenon that affects us all: social engineering. How does it work and how can you protect yourself from it? Cross-referenced answers with Bertrand Trastour, general manager of Kaspersky France, and Tiffany Morisseau, researcher at the Applied Psychology and Ergonomics Laboratory (LaPea) at Paris Cité University.

When we think of hackers, we tend to imagine some obscure person typing lines of code behind a screen, looking for digital vulnerabilities complex. The reality is often much less romantic: “online manipulators rely on fear, anxiety and the threat of serious consequences” for victims, explains Tiffany Morisseau.

That’s social engineering. A set of “techniques and means implemented by attackers in order to capture information regarding you, your environment and your digital habits to derive fraudulent profit,” continues Bertrand Trastour, general manager of Kaspersky France.

Leaning on our fears for profit

Phishing – phishing in French – is probably one of the best known methods of social engineering. A manipulator pretends to be an organization known to the victim (his company, taxes, CAF, etc.) to extract personal data from him, through which he will then be able to extort money. In 2022, the Kaspersky anti-phishing device blocked more than 500 million attempts to access fraudulent pages – double the attacks foiled in 2021.

It is therefore “a phenomenon where we are all potentially targets, in both professional and personal life,” explains Bertrand Trastour. So, how to protect yourself from it? What good habits to adopt? How to protect yourself from it, both technically and psychologically? Answers in the video below.
