[The Epoch Times, October 26, 2023](Reported by Epoch Times reporter Wen Hui) According to the Pasadena Public Health Department, a case of dengue fever was discovered in the city last Friday (20th) ( dengue fever) cases. Dengue fever is an acute infectious disease caused by the dengue virus, which is transmitted to humans via Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes.
Officials said the condition is “extremely rare” and the patient is the first known case in recent times on California soil.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms of dengue fever range from mild to severe and include fever, rash, headache, and muscle and joint pain; severe cases can be life-threatening and require intensive care; most patients resolve in two to seven days .
The Los Angeles Times reported that Pasadena epidemiologist Dr. Matthew Feaster said in a statement that public health officials have been monitoring mosquito-borne infectious diseases such as dengue fever.
“Our work so far in partnership with the vector control district leads us to believe that this is likely an isolated incident and that the risk to people in Pasadena for contracting dengue virus is very low,” Feaster said.
The city’s public health officials visited communities where confirmed patients live to educate residents regarding preventing Aedes mosquito bites.
Relevant authorities have also deployed traps and tested samples in the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control Area, and no dengue virus has been found. Officials said testing will continue in the coming weeks.
There is no preventive vaccine or treatment for dengue fever. Key points of patient care include resting, drinking fluids, and closely monitoring symptoms. ◇
