Marc Ona Essangui, executive secretary of the NGO Brainforest and third vice-president of the Gabonese transitional Senate, discusses the August 30 coup d’état which overthrew President Ali Bongo, as well as the transition period desired by the army before the organization of free elections. He said he was “reassured” by the first words of the proclaimed president, General Brice Oligui Nguema, and his team.

On August 26, when Ali Bongo was re-elected president of Gabon, four days later, he was overthrown by his own Republican Guard and by General Brice Oligui Nguema, close to the ousted president and current president of the transition. This political crisis is the consequence of the “fed up” which had spread to all layers of the population, declares Marc Ona Essangui on France 24. The environmental activist, figure of Gabonese civil society, who was appointed third vice-president president of the Senate of the Gabonese transition, welcomes a “coup of liberation” for the country. “We are not a monarchy,” he insists.

Marc Ona Essangui wants to be reassuring regarding the current transition period before the organization of free elections. Civil society has proposed a short transition, “from six months to a year”, he reports, while the transitional Prime Minister wants a two-year transition. But for General Brice Oligui Nguema, it is the Gabonese who will decide the deadline, within the framework of the Conference, and “depending on the scale of the work that needs to be done”, explains Marc Ona Essangui.

“We are facing a new system which wants to restore the Republic”, concludes the activist who is confident for the future. “We need all the expertise,” observes Marc Ona Essangui, refusing the idea of a simple “Palace revolution” in progress, of a “return of the Bongos”.
