Apple may use Vision Pro to detect and treat mental illnesses

New information from The Information realize that the Apple You may be considering using the Vision Pro to help its users diagnose (and even treat) a range of mental illnesses, such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and more.

According to people “familiar with the matter” interviewed by the vehicle, the company would be studying the possibility of using the various sensors and cameras of its mixed reality (VR/AR) headset to monitor, for example, a person’s facial expressions. and thus detect clues that can lead to the diagnosis of a disease.

More specifically, Vision Pro might measure, for example, the level of dilation of a person’s pupils to understand their current mood, as well as detect swelling in the blood vessels in the eyes — an early symptom of heart failure. If any emotional changes are detected, the device would start displaying sounds and images to help the user.

The idea is that the headset is capable of detecting a state called “flat affect” — term used by psychology to describe moments when the individual shows practically no expression or sign of affection. This state is considered a symptom of conditions/diseases such as schizophrenia, autism, depression, PTSD and even brain damage.

Apple would also have considered using Vision Pro to detect variations in the user’s weight and other types of diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, through movement analysis. These plans, however, ended up losing steam following the company gave up on making the headset capable of tracking the user’s entire body due to a lack of reliability.

As recalled by the report, resources of this type would need to be screened by regulatory agencies in a series of countries before reaching the general public. This, however, should not be a problem for Apple, as it has already gone through this process several times with the Apple Watch, for example — which is capable of detecting irregular heart rhythms.

As this is something still in development, these features may well only arrive in a future version of Vision Pro or simply be canceled altogether. Still according to the The InformationHowever, Apple has been hiring experts in healthcare to test the headset’s capabilities.

So let’s follow along.
